The recent arrest of Telegram’s CEO, Pavel Durov, has sparked significant concern within the international community, particularly from the United Nations (UN). The incident has also sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency market, impacting the prices of tokens within the TON ecosystem.

On August 24, Russian-born Durov was detained in France and charged with various violations related to his messaging app, Telegram. Although he was released four days later, Durov remains under judicial supervision and was required to pay a hefty bail of $5.5 million.

The UN Human Rights Office, through its spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani, expressed alarm over the arrest, citing “human rights concerns.” Shamdasani emphasized that any restrictions on social media platforms like Telegram must align with international human rights standards. Speaking at a weekly UN briefing, she underscored the importance of protecting free expression and privacy in the digital age.

The impact of Durov’s arrest wasn’t confined to the world of human rights discussions. In the cryptocurrency market, tokens related to the TON ecosystem, which is closely associated with Telegram, saw a decline in value. Investors reacted to the news with caution, leading to a temporary dip in prices.
